Welcome to the Southern Region Flotillas Section
Welcome to the home of Optimist dinghy sailing in the Southern Region. The Southern Optimist scene is one of the most welcoming and vibrant in the UK, covering from Chichester Harbour in the East, to Poole Harbour in the West, together with the Isle of Wight, and the Channel Islands.
IOCA South runs a Southern Traveller Series, with 10 regattas throughout the year, in 2 fleets. In 2016 over 300 sailors took part. There is no need to enter – just turn up for any of the events, and you are automatically included in the Series results.
During the winter, IOCA South runs the very popular winter training at Spinnaker Sailing Club, taking place over 6 Saturdays. As a practical minimum children taking part must have their own boat and be able to comfortably sail a triangular course in a range of conditions and be willing to race on the water. More advanced sailors, are taught the methods, skills and tactics necessary to take them to the next level when competing against their peers in open events and then challenge for a place in the Zone Squads the following Autumn.
In summer, IOCA South runs a Girls’ Oppie Camp at Parkstone YC towards the end of the summer holidays. Combining great training, camping out at the bunkhouse, a trip to Splashdown, and team games, the camp is fantastic fun. Check out the 2016 video.
IOCA South maintains its own website, with information on events and training throughout the region, including club training and youth weeks, as well as IOCA South run activities. It also sends out regular newsletters with details of what’s happening.
