Why have training for girls?
The Optimist class working in collaboration with the RYA runs a variety of girl-only training events to encourage both participation as well as improving boat handling skills and on the water confidence. We support Sport England’s expectation of 50:50 male/female participation.
These camps are increasingly popular and demand is high and we are always looking for volunteers in order to help run these. If you feel there is a demand in your region, please get in touch and we can help get a training camp off the ground with you.
Open Girls Training
These camps are open to sailors of all ability. The coaches are often ex Optimist sailors, some of whom have been on the Worlds or Europeans teams, others who may have started their sailing journey in Optimists but may have left early as they grew tall, however, have still gone on to have successful and fulfilling sailing careers in their Youth Classes. These camps are very much aimed at fun with good quality coaching thrown in. Trips to water parks, glamping and games are the order of the day. Please look at your area pages for more information on dates.
Girls Invitational Training
Girls are selected for this training on the basis of their results from the last two Championship Events. The coaching is by a team selected by The Optimist Class National Coach. The goal of this training is to improve the girl’s boat handling skills and decision making as our research shows that girls feel confident on the start line when they are confident in their boat handling skills. Sailors will automatically be invited by the selector’s dependant on their results.
